On Page SEO Basics

On_Page_SEOOn page SEO is the first place to start for making your site a search engine magnet. I see many sites that are in dire need of doing a few simple changes that would prevent the search engine robots from scratching their heads when they visit their site.

Search engine robots are a simple breed. They don’t need much. Just a couple of arrows pointing them in the right direction and a traffic light or two and they’re good to go. But when your site is missing these basic elements, these low IQ search engine robots just get frustrated and go home without bringing back any information about your site to report to their master.

On page SEO consists of a two fold dynamic: Making your site look appealing to human eyes first, while at the same time, not compromising on the needs of search engine crawlers. Here is a bullet list of the various elements for on page SEO:

  • Meta Tags:

Meta tags are what the search engine crawlers use to identify the labeling and description of your web page. The most important element of on page SEO is the title tag. This is the title of the web page. You always want your title meta tag to contain your main keyword. And keep the title at 69 characters or less. (Google only shows that many.) Next we have the description tag. This is the description that you see underneath a website when you’re searching in Google. Keep it at 156 characters or less and write it to people, not search engines. But do include keywords. Lastly we have the keyword meta tag. This isn’t very important these days, but is always good to put in. Add 4 -5 keywords in your keyword meta tag, making sure they pertain to each respective webpage.

  • Alt Tags:These are the title and description tags for the pictures on your page. These are not critical but you might as well use every tool to optimize your on page SEO that you can. Add ALT title and description tags to your pictures, one keyword per picture. And use underscores as spaces between the words of your keyword phrase in the title. Search engines recognize these as spaces.

  • Headline Tags:These are a very important part of on page SEO. Use your keywords in each headline. Start with the H1 tag. Put it as close to the top of the page as possible. Generally, you want to use one keyword per headline and focus the content underneath that headline to that specific keyword. Your second headline, the H2 headline should contain your second main keyword and content beneath it with your 2nd keyword used. Use H3, H4 tags, etc as you write your content.

  • Paragraph Copy:Write your paragraph copy using natural wording and language personal to you. You want to sprinkle your keywords at no more than 3% of the total words in your copy. Use keyword variations and other keywords that are related to your topic. Putting plenty of writing on the page helps with on page SEO. Nobody, especially search engines like to see skimpy pages.

  • Bonus Recommendations:Here are a few more recommendations for enhancing your webpage: Put social sharing buttons at the top of the page. The buttons themselves have no on page SEO value, but when people Tweet your page or Facebook like it, the search engines look at the amount of “social buzz” your page is getting and give you higher rankings accordingly. Also, use “anchor text links” in the paragraph copy of your site. For example rather than making the words “click here” a link to another page in your site, use the main keyword of linked page instead. This is called anchor text, you want to use relevant words as your linking words instead of something generic like “click here”. This, again is not critical. But doing every possible thing to help your on page SEO is a good idea.

And lastly, simply make your content very valuable and relevant to the reader. Make it easy to read, break it up with pictures, headlines, bullet point lists, etc. Nothing does more for on page SEO and gets your site more traffic than people buzzing about and linking to your content.

I hope this gives you a good basic foundation for on page SEO. For some more tips and recommendations, check out my blog post on Creating A New Website With Search Engine Optimization In Mind.
